The RMS Titanic was launched on 31st May 1911 and sank on her maiden voyage on 15th April 1912.
This oil painting by G. Vernon was painted in that same year, but was it a tribute to man's engineering genius or was it painted after 15th April as a reminder of the disaster and a kind of momento mori? There was worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life and one of the most important legacies of the disaster was the establishment of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) in 1914, which still governs maritime safety. Several new wireless regulations were also passed around the world in an effort to learn from the many missteps in wireless communications—which could have saved many more passengers.
This is a well executed painting and appears to be in the original frame of the era.
Oil on board, it measures 390 mm x 320 mm including the frame.
