Circa 1830.
Originally made to display and serve your sweet course or desert. One or two bowls of ice would have been placed at either end of the marble top in order to chill the marble and help keep the food cold. This is a beautiful piece of furniture and quite unique with the hinged top that is easily lifted and propped by carved brackets to expose the marble top and a small shelf. It has two drawers with a central lock, (and key), and two further shelves below. There is heavy and quality carving to the drawers and beautiful turned and fluted legs. This is a unique and quality piece found in a provincial chateau; probably a "one-off" originally commissioned and made on the estate with the local oak. Purchased directly from the estate and recently imported from France.
