This is a handheld stereoscope made by Underwood & Underwood, one of the most influential stereoscopic photography firms of the late 19th and early 20th century. At its height, the company dominated the global market for 3D photographic views, long before cinema or television became commonplace. Made in New York around 1901-1910.

Made during the period when 3D viewing was at its height, this well constructed example features a wooden body with original metal hood and twin lenses, designed to give an immersive three dimensional viewing experience. These stereoscopes were widely used in middle class homes and schools as a way to explore the world from the comfort of the parlour, long before film or television
