Glorious Japanese Satsuma Moriage Dragon Ware Tea set from the early 20th century. Comprising two Teapots,( or one creamer), Sugar bowl, and two trios of tea cups with saucers and side plates. Moriage is a slip decoration of raised enamels. It occurs on Satsuma wares as early as circa 1890. Moriage also seems to be limited to pieces made outside of the Satsuma domain while being typical for Kyoto Satsuma ware.
Teacups have lithopane bases where images of Geishas are visable when held up to the light.
Japanese chacters on the base read "Empire of Japan" indicating these were made for the export market.
