These 10 very colourful illustrations were published in book form in 1962 by Abbott Laboratories in the USA. They have been professionally framed. They depict medical and related professions in their distinctive garb throughout the centuries and are authentic replicas taken from Rome's Institute of Medical History. Also prominent are their tools of trade including forceps, saws, probes, bowls, drills and potions.
The Swiss artist, Warja Honegger-Lavater, (1913-2007), initially studied as a graphic artist and was known for working in the Artist's Book genre. Throughout her career she was particularly strong in working with symbols rather than words and this comes through in this series.
