This beautiful little chest is a delicately made example of early Japanese craftmanship. In lovely original condition, this well proportioned piece has six drawers and two small sliding doors.
In the Tansu book, these Ko-Dantsu are described as small personal chests, some with locking safes, some with locking bars. The box is either cedar or the softer paulownia. Always from the mid to late Meiji Period, 1868 to 1912. Origin: Fukui Prefecture/ Kanazawa/ Northern Kyoto Prefecture.
