This vessel was for burning incense and is probably from the 19th century Kutani ware period. Katani ceramics are epitomized by lavish aesthetics and vivid dark colours, said to be inspired by the wish to brighten the harsh and grey winters in the Hokuriku region of Japan. The “ Komainu”, also known as the “Foo-Lion” is meant to ward off evil spirits. This is a great decorative piece.
