The Type 6 Deputies relighter lamp has a stainless steel top and brass base. It was used in UK and Australian coal mines until the late 1970’s and was carried by Pit Deputies whose task it was to ensure the safe working of the mine. They would inspect their designated area and test for firedamp (methane) and bad air. Also know as the Davy Lamp. 230 mm high.
The Type 6 is a flame safety lamp used for gas testing in coal mines. This miners lamp will safely burn methane/firedamp without causing an explosion. Protector Type 6 lamps emerged in 1929, these are lamps with a flint ignition device which in the prototype was activated by rotating the reservoir. However, an improved flint lighter was designed which used a striker key and was much simpler in construction. This one is in working order and was used by the previous owner.
This example is in great condition save a small chip at the bottom of the glass. This lamp was manufactured in 1973 and is date-stamped. These lamps are still resold by the manufacturer for around 350 UK pounds, making this one a bargain!
Protector Lamps’ history is uniquely tied to its production of mining safety lamps. The company started manufacturing in Worsley and moved to Eccles, England in 1890. The flame safety lamp is essentially a highly sophisticated form of oil or spirit lamp of extremely robust construction.
